The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth installment in The Elder Scrolls action role-playing video game series, following The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Skyrim was released on November 11, 2011, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Three downloadable content (DLC) add-ons were released—Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn—which were repackaged into The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Legendary Edition, which released on June 4, 2013.

Skyrim's main story revolves around the player character's efforts to defeat Alduin, a Dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. Set two hundred years after Oblivion, the game takes place in the fictional province of Skyrim. Over the course of the game, the player completes quests and develops their character by improving their skills. Unlike previous Elder Scrolls games, Skyrim does not require the player to select a character class at the beginning of the game, negating a problem the development team felt previous entries had by forcing the player into a rigid play-style too early in the game. Skyrim continues the open world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel anywhere in the game world at any time and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely.

Gameplay

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an action role-playing game, playable from either a first- or third-person perspective. The player may freely roam over the land of Skyrim, which is an open world environment consisting of wilderness expanses, dungeons, cities and towns. The player may navigate the game world faster by riding horses, or by utilizing a fast-travel system that allows them to warp to previously-discovered locations. The game's main quest can be completed or ignored at the player's preference after the first stage of the quest is finished. Non-player characters populate the world and can be interacted with in a number of ways; the player may engage them in conversation, or kill them. Crimes like murder and theft accrue the player bounty points in each of the world's nine districts. Should the player be stopped by a guard, they may wipe their bounty with gold or jail time, or may resist arrest which will trigger an aggressive pursuit. NPCs may allocate the player additional side-quests, and some side-quests have parameters adjusted based on nearby dungeons the player has yet to explore. Some NPCs that are befriended or hired by the player may act as companions who will accompany the player and provide aid in combat. The player may choose to join factions, which are organized groups of NPCs such as the Dark Brotherhood, a band of assassins. Each of the factions has an associated quest path to progress through. The cities and towns in the game world each have an economy, which the player can stimulate by completing jobs such as farming.

DLC

As mentioned earlier, there are 3 DLCs you can buy/download and add to the game, Dawnguard, Hearthfire, Dragonborn.

Dawnguard

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Dawnguard is the first official downloadable content add-on for the action role-playing open world video game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The game was developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. The Xbox 360 version of Dawnguard launched in English-speaking territories on 26 June 2012, and in France, Germany, Italy and Spain in mid-July 2012. It was released on Microsoft Windows via Steam on 2 August 2012. Due to performance issues, the PlayStation 3 version of Dawnguard had been released late on 26 February 2013.
Dawnguard revolves around an ancient prophecy predicted by an Elder Scroll. The Dawnguard, an organisation dedicated to hunting Vampires, are reformed to attempt to stop the return of a powerful clan of Vampires named the Volkihar. The Volkihar's leader, Lord Harkon, intends to use an Elder Scroll to permanently blot out the sun. The player can choose whether to aid the Dawnguard, or join the Vampires, becoming a Vampire Lord themselves in the process.
Players are given the choice to either join forces with the Vampires, or fight them alongside an order of Vampire hunters known as the Dawnguard. Depending on the player's choice, they will be granted access to one of two home bases, Castle Volkihar or Fort Dawnguard, respectively. New armors, perks and weapons, including a crossbow for the Dawnguard, have been introduced. Crossbows will remain loaded when running through the world and provide a quicker shot than bows. They are, however, slower to reload. Crossbows fall under the Archery perk tree and all points assigned to Archery will also apply to crossbows. Crossbow bolts can also be crafted with enchantments to create bolts with additional magical damage.

Hearthfire

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Hearthfire is the second official downloadable content add-on for the action role-playing open world video game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The game was developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. The Xbox 360 version of Hearthfire launched on September 4, 2012. It was released on Microsoft Windows via Steam on October 5, 2012. It was released for the PlayStation 3 on February 19, 2013, in North America and February 20, 2013 in Europe.
Hearthfire revolves around the addition of land acquisition and the ability for the player to build and customize their own home. The add-on also introduced adoption giving the Dragonborn the option of adopting a child to live with them in their personal home. Hearthfire received a mixed reception from critics.
Hearthfire allows the player character to purchase a plot of land and build their own home from raw materials such as lumber and clay, with the option of adding greenhouses, bee hives and alchemy/enchanting facilities. The option to hire stewards to look after the home, carriage drivers for quick transportation, and a personal bard are also available. Hearthfire also introduces the option to raise a family by adopting children. In addition, previously bought pre-built homes can be altered to have a children's bedroom added into them.

Dawnguard

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Dragonborn is the third and final add-on for the action role-playing open world video game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. It was developed by Bethesda Game Studios and released by Bethesda Softworks on the Xbox Live Marketplace on December 4, 2012. The PC version was released on February 5, 2013 while the PlayStation 3 version was released on February 12, 2013.
Dragonborn involves the player character coming into contact with the first Dragonborn, Miraak. The game takes place on the island of Solstheim, previously featured in the Bloodmoon expansion for The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.
Dragonborn follows the same gameplay style as Skyrim, with the player's character free to explore the island of Solstheim at will, pursuing quests at their leisure. New armors, weapons, locations and enemies have been introduced for the expansion. A new feature in Dragonborn is the ability to tame and ride Dragons. The player character can use the Dragon to target and attack enemies, but does not have complete control of the flight. New Dragon Shouts, or Thu'um, have been introduced, as exclusives to the Dragonborn expansion.
